FAQ

Everything you wanted to know about eSIMs

No jargon. Just straight answers to the questions we get asked most.

The basics
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built directly into your phone. Instead of a physical plastic card, your mobile plan is downloaded and activated electronically. You buy a plan, receive a QR code, scan it, and you're connected - no hardware involved.
A regular SIM is a small plastic card you physically insert into your phone. An eSIM is a chip already soldered inside your device - you activate it by downloading a plan digitally. For travellers: no queuing at airport phone shops, no risk of losing a tiny card, and you can switch plans from your sofa before you fly.
No. Your regular SIM and number stay exactly as they are. The eSIM runs alongside it - your home number still receives calls and texts, while the eSIM handles your data abroad.
The plans on this site are data-only. For calls and texts, your existing home SIM will still work. Most travellers use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or similar apps over data for calls abroad anyway.
Device compatibility
Most flagship phones from the last 4–5 years support eSIM. This includes iPhone XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer. Check your phone's settings - if you see "Mobile Plans" or "Add eSIM", you're good to go.
Yes, from the iPhone XR onwards (all iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 models). iPhones purchased in mainland China or some network-locked devices may not support eSIM - check Settings → General → About → Available SIM.
Your phone's hardware needs to support eSIM, but your home network doesn't need to do anything. The travel eSIM is a completely separate plan - it has nothing to do with your existing provider.
Buying & activating
1. Use the plan finder on the homepage or click "Buy eSIM" next to your destination.

2. Complete the purchase on Yesim's site.

3. You'll receive a QR code by email or in the Yesim app.

4. On your phone go to Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM, scan the QR code.

5. Set the eSIM as your data line. When you land it connects automatically.
Buy and install it at home on Wi-Fi before you travel. The plan typically activates when you first use data in the destination country, so buying a week early won't waste any of your allowance.
Yes - you need an internet connection to download and install the eSIM profile. This is why we recommend setting it up before you travel. Once installed, it works independently of Wi-Fi.
Plans & data
1–2 GB suits a short city break with mostly Wi-Fi. 3–5 GB covers a week of normal use - maps, messaging, social media. 10 GB+ for longer trips or heavy streaming. When in doubt, go slightly bigger.
Your data connection stops. You can top up or purchase a new plan through the Yesim app without needing a new eSIM - just add more data to your existing one.
Yes - each plan has a validity period (usually 7, 15, or 30 days from first use). This is shown clearly before you buy. The timer typically starts when you first connect in the destination country, not when you purchase.
Plans are displayed in EUR. Yesim accepts major credit and debit cards and handles currency conversion at checkout. If paying with a UK card, your bank's exchange rate applies.
Troubleshooting
Check: 1) The eSIM is set as your active data line in Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Mobile Data. 2) Data roaming is enabled for the eSIM line. 3) Try toggling aeroplane mode on and off. If none of these work, contact Yesim support directly.
eSIM profiles can't be reinstalled once deleted - each QR code is single-use. Contact Yesim support as soon as possible; they may be able to reissue a new QR code depending on your plan.
